In Williamson Park, Lancaster

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Adapted by Kevin Dyer

Director:  Joe Sumsion

Designer:  Alison Heffernan

Composer:  Mark Melville

Rehearsals: 9 June

Performance dates:  3 July – 9 August

Casting Brief

We are putting together an ensemble company of 7 actors, who are versatile and multi-talented.  All will need to sing individually and as part of a group, in harmony.  All will work with disparate sounds, improvised instruments and vocalizing techniques to create a live soundscape and musical score for the production.  All need to be fit, with enthusiasm for outdoor work, come rain or shine.

All actors need to have:

Excellent physical characterisation and singing skills

ability with one or more musical instruments

strong sense of musicality and rhythm

strong movement/physical ability

Breakdown

Parts to cast:

Beauty, playing age: 16-19 - a young girl.  Resilient, forgiving, used to giving way.  Doubles with Skink – a reptilian beast, not to be trusted.

Dad.  The Old Man, playing age 50s.  Hard-working.  Loves his children, though not strong on parenting skills.  Doubles with Groyne – a flea-ridden beast.

The Owner.  Playing age 20s.  Totally selfish, proud, arrogant – but also funny and gorgeous.  He becomes The Beast – banished, irascible, confused, stubborn, wild, desperate.  He becomes The Prince – a new-born man, resurrected and innocent.

Darke.  A beast. High status, physically powerful, very handsome.  Leader of the pack (behind The Beast).

(The beasts can be anything at any time: kind, charming, seductive – but also powerful and manipulative.  Cruel, unpredictable, exciting.  They are more animal than human.)

Auditions 21 + 22 April in Lancaster only.  The audition process will include singing an unaccompanied song and taking part in a music, sound and singing workshop, including movement improvisation.
