Pure comedy gold WESTMORLAND GAZETTE
Glorious satire and cruelty GUARDIAN
Excellent production. Vanessa Clarke is breathtakingly brilliant CITIZEN
Brilliantly kitsch, frighteningly accurate. Fantastic VISITOR
Splendid revival. Gatecrash the party before October 16 LANCASHIRE EVENING POST
Convulsions of laughter VIRTUAL LANCASTER
The comedy centres on an evening of entertaining in 1970s suburbia in the lounge of Beverly and Laurence. Beverly is hosting a little soiree for her new neighbours, Ange and Tone, and also Sue from number 9. While the gin & tonics flow, Beverly subjects her guests to an excruciating evening of chilled red wine, cheese & pineapple cubes and Demis Roussos.
Tensions mount, tongues and ties loosen and as the conversation turns from house prices and Leather Look settees to having a go at their other halves, courtesy falls by the wayside.
The play was devised by the original cast working together in character; the personalities are instantly recognisable and completely cringe-making. Decades on, Abigail's Party is as psychologically true and close to home as ever - unbearable but utterly brilliant.
Full of clichés and catchphrases, this is one for anyone who ever aspired to avocado bathroom suites and stuffed olives.
